How to Use the FD Calculator
Fixed deposits are the default safe investment across South Asia and the Gulf: guaranteed returns, no market risk. Enter the amount you plan to deposit, the annual rate your bank is actually offering (don't guess โ check your bank's FD rate card), the tenure in years, and the compounding frequency โ then press Calculate Maturity.
The insight most people miss: compounding frequency moves the needle. Quarterly compounding (the Indian bank standard) beats yearly compounding on the same rate, and stretching tenure from 5 to 10 years more than doubles the interest thanks to compounding on compounding. The effective annual yield row shows what the rate really earns you after compounding โ a 7% nominal rate compounded quarterly is about 7.19% in real terms.
The year-by-year table also reveals why premature withdrawal hurts: interest accelerates later, so breaking an FD early forfeits the richest years. Banks also typically cut about 0.5โ1% for early exit. Compare a few tenure options before you book.
A reality check: the maturity value shown is pre-tax โ FD interest is generally added to your income and taxed at your slab rate. And remember a locked rate is a double-edged sword: your 7% is safe if rates fall, but stuck if rates rise.
