How to Use the Sleep Calculator
Waking up groggy usually isn't about how long you slept β it's about when you woke up. Sleep runs in roughly 90-minute cycles (light sleep β deep sleep β REM). Waking mid-cycle, especially from deep sleep, causes that heavy "sleep inertia" feeling; waking at the end of a cycle feels dramatically easier.
Pick a mode: "I need to wake up atβ¦" if you have an alarm time, or "I go to bed atβ¦" if your bedtime is fixed. Enter the time and press Calculate Sleep Times. You'll get six options counting back (or forward) in full 90-minute cycles, with 15 minutes added for falling asleep. The 5- and 6-cycle options (7.5β9 hours) are marked recommended.
Example: if you must wake at 7:00 AM, the calculator suggests bedtimes like 11:15 PM (6 cycles β 9 hrs) or 12:45 AM (5 cycles β 7.5 hrs). Going to bed at 1:30 AM instead would wake you mid-cycle at 7:00 β which is why a slightly later bedtime can sometimes feel better than an earlier one.
Cycles are averages β real ones vary 80β120 minutes β so treat this as a smart starting point and adjust to what leaves you refreshed. Keep a consistent schedule, dim screens before bed, and keep the room cool and dark for the best results.
