How to Use the Age Calculator

An age calculator does the fiddly calendar maths for you: given a date of birth, it works out exactly how many years, months and days old someone is. That sounds simple, but months have different lengths and leap years add an extra day, so doing it by hand is surprisingly error-prone.

To use it, enter your date of birth and press Calculate Age. By default the age is calculated as of today, but you can pick any "calculate on" date โ€” handy for working out how old someone was (or will be) on a specific day, like a wedding date or a retirement date.

Beyond the headline years-months-days figure, the calculator also shows your total months, weeks, days and hours lived, the day of the week you were born, and a countdown to your next birthday. People use these figures for everything from filling in official forms to fun birthday posts.

Common uses include checking age eligibility for exams, driving licences, voting and retirement; HR departments verifying candidate ages; and parents tracking a baby's age in months. Because the maths accounts for leap years automatically, even tricky birthdays like 29 February are handled correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is exact age in years, months and days calculated?

Full years are counted first, then remaining full months, then remaining days โ€” borrowing days from the previous month when needed, which correctly handles months of different lengths and leap years.

What if I was born on 29 February (leap day)?

The calculator handles it correctly. In non-leap years your birthday is treated as 1 March for the calculation, which is the standard legal convention in most countries.

Can I calculate someone's age on a past or future date?

Yes. Use the optional 'calculate age on' field to pick any date โ€” for example, to find how old someone was on their wedding day or will be on a future milestone.

Why does my age differ from what another site shows?

Most differences come from time-zone handling or from sites that ignore leap days. This calculator uses pure calendar-date maths, which is the correct method.

Is the total days count exact?

Yes. Total days is the exact number of calendar days between the two dates, including all leap days in between.
